The Thermal Springs of Karlsbad

Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) is world-renowned for its 19 recognized effective thermal springs. The sodium bicarbonate-sulfate thermal water originates from a depth of two kilometers and has been used for therapeutic purposes for centuries. With a pH value of 6.9 and a high content of sulfates, carbon dioxide, and chlorine, the water is ideal for drinking cures and balneotherapy.

The Famous Colonnades

The centerpiece of the spa district is the Mühlbrunnen Colonnade, built in the Neo-Renaissance style between 1871 and 1881. Here, you will find six of the Karlsbad springs under one roof. Other significant colonnades include the Sprudel Colonnade with the hottest spring (72°C), the Market Colonnade, the Castle Colonnade, and the Park Colonnade.

Drinking Cure — The Karlsbad Tradition

The drinking cure is the most well-known treatment in Karlsbad. Following the instructions of the spa doctor, patients drink specific amounts of mineral water at set times. The minerals contained have a positive effect on digestive tract diseases, metabolic disorders, and diabetes. The traditional Karlsbad drinking cups (Lázeňský pohárek) are an indispensable companion in this process.

UNESCO World Heritage Since 2021

On July 24, 2021, Karlsbad, along with ten other European spa towns, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the “Great Spa Towns of Europe.” This recognition honors the city’s over 600-year spa tradition, founded by Emperor Charles IV in the 14th century.

Therapeutic Treatments in Karlsbad

In addition to the drinking cure, Karlsbad offers a wide range of treatments: carbon dioxide baths, mud packs, paraffin treatments, magnetotherapy, colon cleansing, and inhalations. The basis of all treatments is the unique thermal mineral water. The cures are particularly effective for diseases of the digestive tract, musculoskeletal disorders, diabetes, and metabolic disorders.
