The Healing Mud of Piešťany — A Unique Natural Remedy
What has made Piešťany famous worldwide is its extraordinary healing mud. Formed from the mineral-rich sediment of the Váh River, infused with sulfurous thermal water and biologically active microorganisms, this mud matures in special aging pools for at least nine months. The result: a black, creamy substance that is unique in its therapeutic effects worldwide.
The Hot Thermal Water
In Piešťany, sulfurous thermal water with temperatures of 67-69°C springs forth from a total of ten sources — the hottest healing springs in Slovakia. The water is rich in hydrogen sulfide, calcium, sodium, and magnesium. It is used for baths, inhalations, and drinking cures.
The Spa Island — A Spa Resort in Itself
The heart of Piešťany is the Spa Island (Kúpeľný ostrov) situated between two arms of the Váh — a car-free area featuring large parks, historic spa buildings, and the traditional Ensana spa hotels: Thermia Palace, Balnea Esplanade, Grand Splendid, and Thermia Park. The hotels are connected to the thermal springs and treatment rooms via bathrobe corridors — treatments are conducted in slippers.
Medical Indications
Piešťany specializes in musculoskeletal disorders: rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, osteoarthritis at all stages, herniated discs, postoperative rehabilitation after joint replacement, and neurological diseases. The healing mud packs are applied to the affected joints at a core temperature of 38-40°C — the combination of heat, minerals, and biologically active substances has a deep anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effect.
The Landmark: The Crutch Breaker
At the entrance to the Spa Island stands the famous sculpture “Barlolamač” (Crutch Breaker) — a healed patient breaking his crutches in two. Since 1933, it has been the symbol of Piešťany and represents the effectiveness of the local treatments. To this day, patients from all over the world come to take a photo with their healthy legs right next to it.
Value for Money
Despite its first-class medical infrastructure and luxurious hotels, a spa stay in Piešťany is significantly cheaper than in Germany or Austria. Two weeks of full board with 12-15 treatments per day often costs less at the Ensana Grand Splendid than a week of inpatient rehabilitation in Germany.
